The Georgian Parliament reviewed and supported amendments to the Law of Georgia “On Higher Education” concerning higher education qualification documents in the first reading on Wednesday.

Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth Affairs Zviad Gabisonia presented the amendments to lawmakers.

Based on the proposed amendments, a qualification document issued upon completion of a single-cycle higher education program before 1 September 2010 will be considered equivalent to a Master’s degree diploma.

The state will recognize documents issued by higher education institutions certifying completion of higher education programs for persons enrolled before 2005, provided that the institution held a license to carry out higher education activities at the time the qualification was awarded.

In addition, documents issued by licensed or legally deemed licensed higher education institutions, confirming completion of higher education programs by students enrolled before 1 September 2010 in accordance with Georgian legislation, will be recognized by the state regardless of the institution’s accreditation status.
