Opposition MPs remark on SSG statement regarding planned provocations

“The State Security Service now joined the Georgian Dream in alleging without evidence that coup-de-tat is plotted in Georgia, financed by money from the West,” said opposition MP Teona Akubardia.

The opposition MP echoed the statement of the State Security Service of Georgia (SSG), reading that “Some groups attempt to organize provocations at parliament aimed at the development of destructive and violent scenarios. These groups are managed by foreign countries’ funding, leaders of parliamentary and non-parliamentary political parties, and heads of non-governmental organizations. Georgian fighters in Ukraine, are actively involved in criminal plans.”

According to Akubardia, the SSG is a “branch office” of the GD, which threatens the Georgian population with revolutions.

“This demonstrates that the SSG is used for political purposes. Even though Russia is the main challenge to Georgia’s security, the SSG statement repeats the quote of the Russian security concept on colour revolutions. All this dramaturgy, never confirmed though, is in the interest of the Georgian Dream to develop a dramatic scenario which is a threat to their power,” she said.

Teona Akubaria inquired why the GD re-introduced the bill On transparency of Foreign Influence if it knew about the risks in advance but still went on the provocation.

“This makes it clear that with similar Russian disinformation statements, they plan to change the country’s foreign policy vector,” she said.

Levan Bezhashvili, a member of the United National Movement (UNM) party, assessed the SSG statement as “not serious.” He said it was the duty of law enforcers to protect citizens from the GD’s “Sonderkommandos.”

“We have seen yet another unserious statement from the State Security Service. When unknown people and gangs move about Tbilisi streets, physically abusing youngsters and intruding into their houses, law enforcers speak about some threats. It is the direct duty of law enforcers to protect citizens from the GD’s Sonderkommandos, which extort violence on Georgian citizens daily,” he said.
