Opposition Alliance’s Bokeria: We aim for free elections and change of regime, but first we need peaceful wave of protest
“The task of both society and the Opposition Alliance is to ensure that free elections are held in the country and that the regime is changed through that process,” said Giga Bokeria, one of the leaders of the Federalists party.
He added that before elections can take place, a fundamental shift in public consciousness is needed, alongside a sustained wave of peaceful protest.
“In Hungary, elections were held, and the opposition won. Our task, the task of society and of the Opposition Alliance, is to ensure that free elections are held in this country and that through those elections we remove the regime that poses a national security threat to our nation. Unlike countries that are already free, we first need a transformation in public consciousness of sufficient depth, and a peaceful wave of protest of sufficient scale, to give us a genuine chance of holding new elections.
The May 26 rally, and the active campaign of the Opposition Alliance and all engaged civic groups to bring more citizens into peaceful protest serve precisely that purpose. Only in this way will we be able to achieve the national task that stands before us: changing this regime, returning our country to the free world, and securing our nation’s safety. The government must be changed through elections; it is simply that we need a large-scale, peaceful protest of sufficient force to break this regime and cause its repressive apparatus to lose its grip to achieve free elections. That is how we will arrive at free elections, and that has been and remains the position of the Federalists and the Opposition Alliance,” Giga Bokeria stated.
