Construction of the 15.9-kilometer Abastumani bypass road is progressing actively, with the road scheduled to open in autumn 2027.

During an inspection of the construction works, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Revaz Sokhadze said that, alongside the development of road infrastructure, particular attention would be paid to environmental restoration, including reforestation works to be planned in cooperation with the relevant agency.

“Work on the Abastumani bypass road is progressing actively. The road will open next autumn. Our goal is to build some of the best road infrastructure here. At the same time, restoring the natural environment, including reforestation, is equally important. We will work with the relevant agency to ensure that these activities are also completed by the time the road opens,” Sokhadze said.

As part of the project, a 368-meter road tunnel has already been excavated. Major construction works have been completed on three of the five new bridges planned under the project, while construction of the remaining two is expected to begin in the near future. Earthworks and slope formation are currently underway. The project is being implemented by a new contractor.

Together with the road section towards Baghdati, which has already been completed, the Abastumani bypass will connect the Imereti and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions through modern transport infrastructure.

The new road will allow transit traffic to bypass the resort, reducing traffic congestion in Abastumani, helping preserve the natural environment and supporting the resort’s development.

Sokhadze inspected the roadworks alongside Levan Darakhvelidze, Head of the Roads Department; Giorgi Shonia, Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund; and representatives of local authorities.
