OFPRA – 1542 citizens of Georgia requested asylum in France in 2017

A total of 1542 Georgian citizens applied for asylum in France in 2017, which is twice more compared to the last year,- French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (OFPRA) reported.

According to OFPRA, the asylum seekers say political persecution of the opposition United National Movement party’s activists is a basic motive for seeking asylum. They explain the political persecution launched after “Georgian Dream” coalition came into power.

“Ethnic conflicts, activities of the occupation forces, sexual harassment, domestic violence and fear of repeated punishment in human dignity conditions are among the motives for requesting the asylum.

There have also been raised applications from businessmen who complain of criminal actions by political forces,” OFPRA report says.
