Nika Gilauri: Imperative of supporting needy and oppressed must not be criminalized
“Seizing fund accounts on the grounds of alleged criminal offences is a grave injustice. Supporting victims is not a crime; it is the duty of all individuals who believe in the salvation of our country and its European future,” wrote Nika Gilauri, former Prime Minister of Georgia, on Facebook.
“These funds, supported by the donations of businesses and citizens, assist victims of political repression, those unjustly fined, physically assaulted individuals, cover the costs of their medical treatment, and support the families of detainees.
When you equate doing good with crime or associate helping the marginalized with treachery, you only strengthen public unity and solidarity. Doing good, helping those in need, and supporting the unjustly oppressed will not be banned in Georgia,” he asserted.
On March 17, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia seized the bank accounts of several non-entrepreneurial, non-commercial legal entities (NNLEs), including “Nanuka’s Foundation,” “Prosperity,” “Fund for Each Other 24/7,” “Sirtskhvilia,” and “Tbilisi Human Rights House.”
The Prosecutor’s Office claimed that these funds were implicated in organizing acts of violence.
