MP Samkharadze highlights Georgia's commitment to European integration in Budapest
“In Budapest, we had the opportunity to engage with various delegations. Our primary goal was to convey that Georgia remains steadfast in pursuing European integration. European colleagues must understand the core of our policy and recognise that we act with security in mind,” stated Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, summarising the Georgian delegation’s visit to Hungary.
He explained that the Georgian delegation engaged in meaningful discussions with numerous representatives during the Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments and Partner Countries (EUSC).
“Our main message was to reaffirm that Georgia is committed to EU integration and aspires to join the European Union. Our wishes and constitutional mandate have not changed. We remain dedicated to the goal set before the October elections – Georgia will be the best-prepared candidate for EU membership by 2030. However, we also emphasised that, in some cases, the EU’s approach toward Georgia is unfair and overlooks the security challenges we face, including occupation and regional tensions,” Samkharadze noted.
He added that Georgia is not a NATO member and lacks security guarantees.
“Consequently, European colleagues need to grasp the essence of our policy and understand that we act based on security considerations. There is a shared understanding that Georgia must preserve its sovereignty, maintain fragile security, and continue economic development to implement the reforms necessary for EU accession. Without peace and stability, reforms cannot succeed. I did not hear anything contrary to this in our meetings,” he concluded.
