MP Samadashvili: Instead of debating Georgia's candidate status, MEPs discuss Saakashvili's health
All political groups in the European Parliament, including the Socialist Party, a partner of the Georgian Dream (GD), urge the government to transfer ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili overseas for treatment, opposition MP Salome Samadashvili has stated.
According to MP Samadashvili, Saakashvili’s health threatens Georgia’s European future, and the EP was debating Saakashvili’s health and life rather than showing support for Georgia’s candidate status.
“The European Parliament’s consideration of urgently adopting the resolution sends a strong message to the Georgian people and government. Regardless of the country’s strong political backing, resolving Saakashvili’s issue is critical to ensuring the country’s European future,” she explained.
Earlier, MEP Andrius Kubilius stated that if the Georgian government continued to treat Saakashvili’s case in the same manner, it would signal that the recommendations affecting Georgia’s European membership had not been met.
“Georgia will not be granted candidate status if you do not follow our rules,” the MEP threatened. He stated that holding Mikheil Saakashvili as a “political prisoner” was a “test” for the Georgian government.
On February 15, the European Parliament will vote on a resolution about Mikheil Saakashvili’s health.
