MP Nikoloz Samkharadze: EU suspended integration process; Georgia ready to restore constructive dialogue

The Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, MP Nikoloz Samkharadze, described his meeting with the Speakers of both chambers of the Belgian Parliament as highly fruitful.

According to Samkharadze, the Georgian delegation briefed Belgian lawmakers on domestic political developments, the regional security environment, and the ongoing situation in Georgia’s occupied territories.

Samkharadze noted that the discussions centred on Georgia–EU relations.

“We clearly emphasised that the current stalemate serves neither our interests nor those of the European Union. However, it is the European Union itself that formally halted the integration process. Our primary message to the Speakers of both Belgian parliamentary chambers was to ask for their mediation with the EU to restart this dialogue. We stand ready to resume talks on any issue. Constructive engagement is in the vital interest of both Georgia and the European Union.

Our conversations also touched upon the broader security landscape and Georgia’s pivotal role in fostering peace across the South Caucasus. We discussed maximising the potential of the Middle Corridor, in which the EU is a key stakeholder, given that a significant volume of cargo destined for Europe flows directly through Georgian territory,” Samkharadze stated.
