MP Makhashvili: Statement that Europe is peace project demands more than words, it requires concrete action
“Europe was truly created as a peace project, and it remains one. That is why Georgia aspires to join the European Union, and why a significant portion of the Georgian population longs for EU membership,” said MP Levan Makhashvili, a member of the Georgian Dream.
Makhashvili emphasised that peace also entails responsibility, and there was an expectation that European representatives would approach this vital peace endeavour with seriousness and accountability.
“Unfortunately, those expectations have not been fulfilled. Behind closed doors and in the public eye, we saw a stark contrast, from European Parliament resolutions demanding sanctions, air and land blockades, and escalation with Russia, to the reality we face. It is one thing to declare that Europe is a peace project, but it is another entirely to see that these noble words are not reflected in actions. The truth is that the declaration of Europe as a peace project needs to be validated through tangible deeds,” Makhashvili stated.
The MP expressed disappointment that, over the past three years, some EU member states have manipulated this issue, urging their neighbours to escalate tensions with Russia under the guise of seeking peace.
“Europe’s claim to be a peace project must be proven through concrete measures, not just rhetoric. Sadly, what we have witnessed so far from certain EU states is the opposite of what true peace-building requires,” Makhashvili concluded.
The European Union Delegation to Georgia recently posted a statement on social media, reading that “the EU is built for peace,” and that “Georgia’s path to the EU is a path to a safer and more secure future, becoming part of this historic peace project.”
