MP Makhashvili labels FM Valtonen as European Joe Wilson, turning bilateral relations into political manipulation
“We do not anticipate any notable developments from the ministerial meeting concerning Georgia. I advise individual foreigners to refrain from speaking on behalf of the Georgian people,” said MP Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee, in response to statements made about Georgia ahead of the upcoming European Union Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.
Makhashvili also mentioned that he would be closely monitoring the proceedings of the ministerial in Luxembourg.
“It is crucial to pay attention to the decisions the European Union makes, as they carry geopolitical implications, including for Georgia. We do not expect anything extraordinary regarding Georgia this time, just the usual critical and somewhat disconnected statements that we have seen in previous years. Perhaps the Council will conclude in the same manner.
As for the comments made by individuals about Georgia, I strongly advise everyone to stop speaking on behalf of the Georgian people. Whoever these foreigners are, some retired, some having lost their mandates in local elections, it first indicates that they are not on the right side of the issue and are unable to assess current events sensibly.
Regarding the Finnish Foreign Minister’s statement. What should she say? I wasn’t present on the blocked Rustaveli Avenue; I didn’t participate in those events. What reason does she have to name? What we are witnessing is that Elina Valtonen is becoming a European Joe Wilson, someone who, driven by personal interests, is ready to turn bilateral relations into political manipulation. This is a sad reality.
Otherwise, perhaps someone genuinely believes in their stance; we might understand, accept, and even criticise it, but it would at least be understandable. In this particular case, the most regrettable aspect is that she is hiding behind OSCE institutions, attempting to make statements in their name. The only feeling one can have is that she is trying to transform herself into a European Joe Wilson,” MP Levan Makhashvili concluded.
