MP Makhashvili: Georgia should not be challenged on unclear opinions; these laws are vital amid external interference and money laundering

“We did not request the Venice Commission’s opinion, so those who sought their input can approach them directly. When we were adopting the law, we stated that we are prepared to repeal the FARA law if the Americans determine that the law does not align with democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law,” said MP Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee.

Makhashvili added that if the fundamental issues that prompted the law’s adoption no longer exist, then there will be no need for it.

“If they decide to repeal the law, which has successfully protected American democracy for decades, we will do the same. If they choose not to, then why are they asking us?” Makhashvili questioned.

“There is no explanation provided as to why Georgia adopted this legislation. We explained that the laws were enacted because of specific problems. If those core issues no longer exist, the very reasons for adopting the law, then there will be no need for it. As long as external interference and illegal money laundering persist, these laws will be necessary. We are not going to challenge Georgia over unclear recommendations,” he emphasised.

The Venice Commission published its opinions on laws concerning the Foreign Agents Registration Act and the Law on Grants.
