MP Machavariani: US decision not surprising, Venice Commission prioritizes politics over law

Regarding the Venice Commission, unfortunately, in recent years we have observed that it has made political assessments instead of purely legal evaluations, Levan Machavariani, First Deputy Chairman of the Georgian Dream parliamentary faction, told journalists.

Machavariani commented on the presidential memorandum signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, which calls for the United States to withdraw from 66 international organizations, including the Venice Commission.

“Our society should not forget that, if I am not mistaken, the Venice Commission previously recommended removing from the Constitution the provision defining the family as the union of a man and a woman. They also recommended repealing the law on transparency and anti-LGBT propaganda, and suggested that transparency requirements should not apply to wealthy NGOs, among other issues. Accordingly, this decision by the U.S. is not really surprising,” Machavariani said.

Journalists also asked him about the U.S. position that these organizations “advance their own agenda against our interests or pose a threat to the sovereignty, freedom, and general well-being of our nation.”

“In general, this U.S. position means only one thing: the rules-based international order established after World War II no longer exists, and we are witnessing the process of a new world order forming. In this context, a small country like Georgia must be highly mobilized, attentive, flexible, and pragmatic. It is necessary to pursue the policy that the Georgian Dream is following today, ensuring that the emerging world order will be adapted in a way that maximally protects the national interests of our country,” Machavariani said.

For context, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum proposing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations, including the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed on social media: “We will stop subsidising globalist bureaucrats who act against our interests.”
