MP Levan Makhashvili: U.S. visit aimed to communicate our positions to American side and to understand their plans regarding Georgia

“The visit to the United States was productive, engaging, and timely in terms of fostering relations,” said MP Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee.

According to him, Georgia is actively rebuilding its relationships with its partners.

“We are constructing these relations brick by brick; in essence, we are getting to know each other from the very beginning. Unfortunately, under the previous administration, these relations were so severely damaged that we have to rebuild everything from scratch. The primary aim of this visit was to convey our perspectives to the Americans. Additionally, it was about understanding the current geopolitical realities in which Georgia is developing, and why we make certain domestic and foreign policy decisions. Our task was to listen to the Americans’ positions, not only regarding their plans for Georgia but also their broader regional strategy and how they envision the role of this region within American foreign policy. We will draw our conclusions once the delegation returns.

Regarding the efforts to rebuild relations, it was a good, interesting, and timely visit. This is neither the first nor will it be the last. Parallel to this, the Georgian government continues to develop, build, and strengthen these partnerships, despite ongoing attempts to undermine this process through misinformation and disinformation campaigns. They aim to prevent the restoration and realignment of these relations. Initially, they targeted where we are going and whom we are meeting, then questioned where and with whom we will meet. We remain steadfast in our commitment to restoring these relations, grounded in justice and mutual respect. I am confident that attempts to damage these relations will persist both within Georgia and abroad. They promote a narrative that the country is in isolation, in an effort to prevent that narrative from collapsing. I believe this visit has, for the first time, addressed and answered many of these concerns,” Makhashvili concluded.
