MP Levan Makhashvili: Previous U.S. administration left heavy legacy; mutual understanding exists on need to rebuild relations
“The previous U.S. administration left a heavy legacy. There is a mutual understanding that further steps are necessary to consign this legacy to history and to rebuild relations based on mutual interests,” stated MP Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee.
According to him, society has been observing the realisation of this political will over recent months.
“If we evaluate progress by sectors, there have been steps taken in security, education, and the economy. There has been periodic political communication at the highest level, and this is precisely the ongoing working process. We prefer not to raise expectations loudly at this stage, as we want to give the process space to develop and for agreements to be reached on certain issues. We see that these relations are moving forward through communication, visits, and phone calls. There is a positive dynamic, and we hold optimistic expectations regarding further progress; that sooner or later, we will be able to bring these relations to the point we consider ideal. That is, the restoration of a strategic partnership. We must be patient and allow these processes to unfold. A productive and fruitful working process is underway, and we hope that in the near future, we will have the opportunity to inform the public about specific steps,” Levan Makhashvili has said.
