MP Levan Makhashvili: October 4 demonstrators wanted to overthrow government; their later distancing is evasion of responsibility
“We assured the public that October 4 would pass peacefully and calmly from a state perspective, and that is precisely what occurred,” stated MP Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee.
According to Makhashvili, October 4 was not a spontaneous event but a calculated effort aimed at overthrowing the government.
“From their point of view, it was carried out with a noble purpose, but in reality, it was an action without justification, similar to the themes in one of the literary works, The Attempted Coup Read Out Loud. We told the population that October 4 would be peaceful and orderly, and that is exactly what happened. Of course, those attempting to incite unrest found that October 4 did not end peacefully for them. Some will spend the days ahead behind bars. October 4 was not an impulsive rally; it was a deliberate attempt to topple the government. Therefore, every person present was a participant, united in the goal of overthrowing the authorities. When things go awry, people tend to start distancing themselves, an attempt to evade responsibility. When a ship is sinking, everyone tries to save themselves. Now, it appears that the sole culprits are Paata Burchuladze, Paata Manjgaladze, and others. But of course, everyone involved bears some measure of responsibility,” Makhashvili concluded.
