MP Irakli Cheishvili: We are ready for discussion, not concessions with EU on Transparency Law and beyond

“Our position remains unchanged. We have always been ready for dialogue with the European Union. We have stated on numerous occasions that we remain unilaterally committed to a stance of friendship,” declared MP Irakli Cheishvili, a member of the parliamentary majority.

Cheishvili stated that Georgian Dream remains entirely open to talks with the EU, covering both the Law on Transparency and any other matter.

“We did not slam the door on the European Union; rather, the opposite occurred. Consequently, Nikoloz Samkharadze said nothing to contradict this. He merely requested mediation so that the dialogue process could be set in motion and renewed.

We are ready to talk about the Law on Transparency and beyond. We have our evidence and our arguments demonstrating just how crucial the adoption of this law was, as well as how our future relations with the EU should look against the backdrop of this legislation.

We have repeatedly said that we are capable of holding discussions and debates on any enacted piece of legislation. This is not about making concessions; it is about engaging in discussion and dialogue surrounding any law, whether it concerns transparency or anything else. Where did you read that concessions are on the table, at this stage, at least?” Cheishvili remarked.

During his visit to Luxembourg, MP Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chairman of the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, commented on the diplomatic push:

“We have requested the Luxembourgish side to raise the issue with the European Commission regarding the resumption of dialogue with Georgia. We stand ready to discuss critical issues, including the law that served as the formal pretext for suspending the EU-Georgia dialogue, by which I mean the Transparency Law.”
