MP Gorduladze: Unelected EU bureaucracy will not dare to pressure US over democracy
“Representatives of the United States are increasingly expressing concern that Europe is facing what they describe as a “civilizational abyss,” warning that the continent is developing in the wrong direction. According to these assessments, the so-called liberalism currently promoted in Europe has turned into a pseudo-culture that suppresses freedom of speech and expression and imposes a specific ideology on society. Critics argue that such practices contradict the fundamental values on which the European Union was originally founded,” said Archil Gorduladze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs.
He said that the EU’s foundation is based on Christian principles rooted in respect, mutual cooperation, and the protection of state sovereignty.
“Unfortunately, today we see these principles being trampled by unelected bureaucrats backed by global powers. When President Trump openly points this out, no one from the unelected bureaucracy or from the governments of EU member states dares to respond,” he said.
Gorduladze also addressed criticism directed at Georgia regarding democratic backsliding.
“We hear accusations that democracy is declining in our country. Let the unelected bureaucracy now dare to demand accountability from President Trump, his administration, or the United States for democratic backsliding. They will not do this. They believe that only small, territorially limited and economically weaker countries can be pressured, while stronger states are untouchable. This reflects a breakdown of the legal order that has underpinned the global system for nearly 80 years. What we are witnessing today is not the rule of law, but the law of power,” he said.
U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, stated: “I love Europe, and I want to see Europe do good, but it’s not heading in the right direction.”
