MP Gorduladze emphasises need for transparency in EU fund spending

“It’s not a problem for wealthy NGOs if they are registered on some foreign website. However, when it comes to a Georgian website, they encounter issues,” remarked MP Archil Gorduladze, a member of the parliamentary majority.

Gorduladze stressed that transparency is crucial—people have the right to know how EU funds are being spent.

“We discovered information about funding through a website within the EU, which details the grants received by NGOs. But in reality, we have no clarity on where these funds have actually been spent. Wealthy NGOs often demonstrate a lack of respect for our country and its legislation. They are untroubled by being registered on foreign platforms, yet when it comes to Georgian sites, suddenly they have problems. This behaviour leads us to believe that such entities have no genuine homeland,” Gorduladze said.

He emphasised that transparency is vital not only for our international partners and the European Union but also for our nation and its citizens, so they can see exactly how funds received from the EU are being allocated. Unfortunately, Gorduladze pointed out, some of the NGOs funded by the EU are engaged in waging a hate campaign within Georgia.

The vice-president of the Patriots for Europe political group in the European Parliament is working to establish a committee dedicated to transparency and accountability, and she is actively collecting signatures to support this initiative. A Hungarian Member of Parliament has raised questions regarding the contracts between the EU and tens of thousands of NGOs, demanding detailed publication of related data. This includes information about grants awarded by Brussels to Georgia’s third sector, which is also being sought in documents requested from and published by the European Commission.
