MP Davit Matikashvili: Hungarian people's vote reflects their trust; strengthening ties between Hungary and Georgia is our priority

“What matters above all is that the Hungarian people voted for the political force in which they place their trust,” the chairman of the Georgian Parliament’s Procedural Issues Committee, MP Davit Matikashvili, has stated.

He added that it is important for relations between the Hungarian and Georgian peoples and governments to deepen further.

“Péter Magyar’s opposition alliance, Tisza, has won a convincing victory, securing even a constitutional majority in the Hungarian parliament. The incumbent Prime Minister’s political force came second. Only three parties managed to clear the electoral threshold. Voter turnout was exceptionally high.

On behalf of the Georgian people and our government, the Prime Minister congratulated the winning force. It is very important to us that we maintain the finest possible relations with our friend Hungary, as has been our tradition over many years, and we hope that this change in the political establishment will not affect the exceptionally strong relationship that exists between the Hungarian and Georgian peoples,” Matikashvili said.

He also noted that Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze had expressed his gratitude to Viktor Orbán for the remarkable friendship and support he had shown towards Georgia and the Georgian people over the years.

“What we observed is that the elections passed in a calm atmosphere. Civic engagement was very high, with queues forming at polling stations. There was none of the radicalism that sometimes accompanies elections. What matters most is that the Hungarian people made their choice and voted for the political force they trust to form a new government and shape Hungary’s domestic and foreign policy. It is important to us that relations between the Hungarian and Georgian peoples and governments continue to deepen. It is worth noting that the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to Viktor Orbán for the remarkable friendship and support he has consistently shown towards Georgia and the Georgian people over the years,” Matikashvili stated.
