Moambe turns 55

GPB’s news bulletin Moambe turned 55 today. Under this name, Georgian Television Information Service was founded on January 4th, 1968. This very name was given to it by Tamaz Khomeriki, the head of news at the time. Prior to it, the first newscast, titled Latest News, was broadcast in 1959.

Ten years after television was first created, Moambe began its daily transmission. The hosts and anchors have changed over time. For many years, Moambe was the only information source in the nation. The national movement, the early years of independence, the war in Abkhazia, and other significant recent historical events captured by the Moambe cameramen are among the unique footage preserved in the GPB archive.

Today, Moambe is aired live from the modern studio. News is broadcast on TV, radio, and the website. GPB media output is translated into the languages of ethnic minorities.

Tinatin Berdzenishvili, Director General of the GPB First Channel, claims that “Moambe has preserved and grown viewers’ confidence.”

In her remark, Berdzenishvili pledged, “We make every attempt to make the Moambe, the Public Broadcaster the only—if not the most—reliable one for the audience.”

Moambe has been broadcasting for over 50 years. A half-century is a very serious milestone. It is true that public broadcasting and state television are not the same. I believe, Moambe has further boosted confidence while maintaining stability and the audience’s devotion,” she asserted.
