Georgia’s ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili has accepted the Georgian government’s offer to be transferred to the Gori Military Hospital and is ready to stop hunger strike there, lawyer Nika Gvaramia has announced.

Gvaramia noted that “due to security measures,” Saakashvili would be transferred later today without specifying the exact time.

He also said they need to hear from the specialists that “everything is in place there even though the hospital with high-tech equipment was built by Saakashvili, and there are probably highly qualified doctors.” He stressed that the post-starvation rehabilitation protocol should be written by specialists and be daily reported.

Gvaramia added that Saakashvili’s health state is “relatively better with no serious complications.”

Today, Justice Minister Rati Bregadze has offered jailed Mikheil Saakashvili a transfer to Gori Military Hospital for treatment. He said the military hospital is well-equipped to treat Saakashvili, but the transfer requires his consent.

Following Bregadze’s offer, Droa leader Elene Khoshtaria stopped the hunger strike. She started the hunger strike on November 3 demanding Saakashvili’s transfer to a civilian clinic.

Mikheil Saakashvili, who is on the 50th day of his hunger strike, has been taken to the No.18 prison infirmary on November 8.

The ex-president has been charged with several criminal offences. In 2018, he was sentenced to six years in prison in absentia for abuse of power.
