Mike Pompeo: U.S. looks forward to one day welcome Georgia into NATO
Georgia is the largest non-NATO state troop contributing to Afghanistan. 32 Georgian soldiers, who made ultimate sacrifices in pursue the peace and stability there. The United States honours Georgia’s sacrifice and we are deeply grateful for Georgia’s vast support in this important joint mission, – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made the regarding statement after the meeting with the Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili at the State Department in Washington on May 2.
According to him United States and Georgia continue deepening security relationship, including cooperation on fighting against global terrorism.
In the parliamentary and local elections in 2016 and 2017, Georgian people reaffirmed their Euro-Atlantic choice, including Georgia’s future membership in NATO. Our decision remains unchanged – President Trump stands by the 2008 Bucharest declaration and U.S. looks forward to one day welcome Georgia into NATO.
We know that open society and strong economy are together foundation elements for Georgia’s security. Rule of Law combined with the independent judiciary, academic government and respect of pluralism are essential for democratic and economic development. To create even more democracy U.S. encourages Georgia to create opportunities for all voices to be heard in politics, in media and to strength the check and balances in government institutions.
In spite Russia’s occupation of the 20 % of its territories, Georgia has continued to reform, its success carries with the great responsibility to fulfil the expectations of Georgian people. Our two countries are close partners and friends. U.S. stood for Georgia and under the President Trump we will continue to stand with you”, – Mike Pompeo said.
