The Ministry of Internal Affairs has apprehended 34 individuals on charges related to drug trafficking.
Minister of Internal Affairs Gela Geladze announced this operation during a briefing today.
“I am pleased to inform the public about another successful police operation. As a result of targeted measures carried out at dozens of locations nationwide late last night, we arrested 34 suspects involved in drug trafficking. The detainees include both Georgian citizens and foreigners. Most of them were engaged in the illegal sale of various narcotic substances. Some were involved in the illegal purchase and storage of large, even very large, quantities of drugs. I also want to emphasise that several of these individuals are major drug dealers,” Geladze stated.
The Interior Minister explained that investigations have revealed these suspects participated in complex drug distribution schemes. They employed various methods to circulate narcotics, most notably, placing drugs at specific locations via internet applications and social networks. The sale was reportedly coordinated through nightclubs and entertainment venues.
“Based on a court order, controlled buys were conducted multiple times from those arrested, and covert audio-visual recordings captured these transactions. During searches of their personal and residential premises, law enforcement seized a significant amount of different narcotics, including heroin, cocaine, Suboxone, methadone, Alpha PVP, and others, as well as packaging materials and, presumably, funds obtained from illegal sales. Additionally, firearms and ammunition without proper registration were recovered,” Geladze added.
“If convicted, these individuals face imprisonment for up to 20 years or even life imprisonment. I want to express my deepest gratitude to all police officers tirelessly working to halt the spread of drugs in our country, saving countless citizens from the devastating grip of addiction,” concluded Geladze.
