“Mzia Amaglibeli just sentenced to 2 years in prison. This is not just political persecution of a brilliant journalist. Mzia has become a symbol of Georgian’s fight for a European future,” wrote MEP Rasa Juknevičienė on the X Platform, echoing the verdict announced in the case of Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of the Batumelebi and Netgazeti media outlets.

“Mzia Amaglibeli just sentenced to 2 years in prison. This is not just political persecution of a brilliant journalist. Mzia has become a symbol of Georgian’s fight for a European future. Ivanishvili’s regime is killing freedom and democracy faster than the Kremlin did in Russia,” she said.

Batumi City Court has sentenced Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of the Batumelebi and Netgazeti media outlets, to two years in prison.

Law enforcement initially detained Mzia Amaglobeli in Batumi during a protest near the Police Main Department on January 11 under administrative procedure. She was later released on recognisance but was subsequently re-arrested under Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which concerns assaulting a police officer and carries a potential sentence of four to seven years of imprisonment.
