According to Zurab Abashidze, May 13 is a remarkable day in the history of Georgian sports.

“I would like to congratulate you on this remarkable event! May 13 is a significant day in the history of Georgian sports. On May 13, 1981, Dinamo Tbilisi defeated Carl Zeiss Jena to win the 1980–81 European Cup Winners’ Cup at the Rheinstadion in Düsseldorf, Germany. We all remember this proud day, a magnificent match played by Dinamo Tbilisi gold generation, and the goals scored by Vladimir Gutsaev and Vitaly Daraselia.

Our older generation remembers the May 13 event so impressively that it is impossible not to revive the emotions as if we all partcipated in the greatest joy, which united the entire Georgia that day.

Assigning the name of May 13 to this square will be another stimulus to youngsters to remember this day of victory and to have the faith that they can achieve everything with great wish and diligence and that victory in sports can unite the nation,” he said.

Levan Abashidze commended everyone who participated in the opening of the square.

Sakrebulo members, representatives of the Georgian Football Federation and football players of the May 13, 1981, historical match attended the opening.
