Majority MP Zarkua criticizes German Ambassador's remarks, demands recall
Irakli Zarkua, a member of Georgia’s parliamentary majority, has strongly criticized the German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, over recent comments regarding Georgia’s economy. Zarkua accused the ambassador of confusing his rights and duties.
Fischer had remarked that the economic situation in Georgia would soon change, noting that the processes in Ukraine had created factors boosting the economy, though he emphasized that this was temporary.
Zarkua expressed concern about Fischer’s tone, suggesting the ambassador overstepped his role by making political statements about an independent country.
“You should not speak in this tone to the government of an independent country,” Zarkua remarked.
The Georgian MP also pointed out discrepancies in Fischer’s understanding of Georgia’s economy, noting that some Eastern European countries, such as Latvia, have surpassed Georgia in trade with Russia, particularly in the wine industry. He accused Fischer of showing double standards and aligning with radical views.
Zarkua further questioned the legitimacy of the ambassador, suggesting that the collapse of the German coalition government that appointed Fischer undermines his authority. “The government that appointed you has collapsed, and you have no legitimacy,” Zarkua added.
Zarkua urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to consider recalling Fischer, stating that his actions and statements are damaging to Georgian-German relations.
“I would like us to start the procedure for recalling this ambassador,” Zarkua concluded, expressing doubt about Fischer’s ability to positively impact bilateral relations.
