Luxembourg FM: Georgia has taken the European future; there is no evidence that elections were not fair, if that’s the case, we need to discuss this

“Georgia was close to the European way, but for the moment, I say that they take a distance,” Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister, Xavier Bettel, made this statement on Georgia during a doorstep ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

“This is a pity, because of the Georgian people. And I also heard that the elections were difficult. I’m not a member of any council or body that controls, but I hear that people are fully unhappy for the moment. If the elections were right, we have to respect the result. If the elections were not right, we need to be able to see what is possible to do. But for me, for the moment, Georgia has taken the European future. At the same time, for the moment, there is no evidence that the elections were not fair, but if that’s the case, we need to discuss this. And the second, it is a pity is they go far away from Europe. They were close to Europe,” Xavier Bettel has stated.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council is convening in Luxembourg today, chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. The primary topics on the agenda for the EU foreign ministers include the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, developments in Moldova, the EU’s relations with the Indo-Pacific region, and the situation in Sudan. A press conference will be held at the conclusion of the meeting, scheduled for 16:45 Tbilisi time.
