Lelo’s Sioridze: This case is unprecedented for Georgia, stripping a million Georgians of their choice, risking the legalisation of a one-party dictatorship

“The world has never seen a case where the entire political opposition was bundled into a single trial, a single dispute and a single lawsuit,” said Giorgi Sioridze, a member of Lelo – Strong Georgia.

He said there is a risk of one-party dictatorship being legalised in the country.

“Lumping the political opposition together in a single lawsuit is unknown in the national legislation of any country or in the practice of international courts. It is all the more unprecedented for our country. Because in our case this is about actually taking away the choice of a million Georgians, there is a real danger of one-party dictatorship being legalised. The Constitutional Court could have asked the Strasbourg court for an opinion, but it refused,” Sioridze said.

The Constitutional Court rejected Lelo’s motion to send the lawsuit on the five-party ban to Strasbourg for an advisory opinion.
