Lelo's Datunashvili: GD long ignores Venice Commission, regardless US position

“Georgian Dream wants Georgia not to be a member of any organization that can exercise leverage over the ruling party,” said Tazo Datunashvili, a member of Lelo – Strong Georgia.

According to Datunashvili, the actions and rhetoric of Georgian Dream in recent months indicate an intention to isolate the country and move it toward Russia.

“All the behavior of Georgian Dream suggests that it seeks to completely isolate Georgia and turn it into a satellite dictatorial regime of Russia. Does the current government want Georgia to leave the Council of Europe? It certainly does, because the only remaining constraints are the obligation to implement rulings of the European Court of Human Rights and the recommendations of bodies such as the Venice Commission. This is a serious problem for them, as they are governing in a dictatorial manner and shaping such a system,” Datunashvili said.

He added that although it remains to be seen how far the government will go, its rhetoric and actions clearly point in this direction.

“They want Georgia to withdraw from any organization that can hold them accountable. Claims that the Venice Commission has lost its influence are false. The Commission still has sufficient authority to assess and draw conclusions about the laws of an autocratic regime in Georgia. References to the American example are merely another layer of propaganda. Georgian Dream has ignored Venice Commission recommendations for a long time, regardless of the United States’ position. This is simply additional propaganda noise used to justify their actions,” Datunashvili stated.

Commenting on a possible ban on political parties, Datunashvili said Lelo – Strong Georgia was the first to file a constitutional complaint.

“We will fight this process, challenge Georgian Dream in court, and seek to have the entire process declared unconstitutional. We will not surrender any position without a fight. Even though we are living under a dictatorial regime and the Constitutional Court lacks real institutional independence, we will continue to struggle—on the streets, through political activity, and through legal means—despite living in an unlawful state,” Datunashvili said.

For context, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum proposing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations, including the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed on social media: “We will stop subsidising globalist bureaucrats who act against our interests.”
