Legal Affairs Committee Chair: UNM and its affiliates act illegally; grounds for constitutional lawsuit exist

“The United National Movement and its affiliates are acting unlawfully. There are sufficient grounds for a constitutional lawsuit to be filed, allowing the Constitutional Court to render an objective decision,” stated Archil Gorduladze, the chairperson of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Georgian Parliament.

In comments to journalists, Gorduladze emphasized that the Georgian Dream consistently delivers on its electoral promises, one of which was to ban the United National Movement and its associated parties.

“These parties and individuals are engaged in illegal activities, and there are ample reasons to file a constitutional complaint that would compel the Constitutional Court to make a fair ruling. The temporary investigative commission has already identified factual circumstances that provide a basis for such a complaint. However, we will await the commission’s final report.

One factor will be the ongoing investigation by the prosecutor’s office; if serious crimes committed by them are uncovered, this will further justify the banning of parties hostile to Georgia. No one should be allowed to hypocritically establish new parties that replicate the UNM in our political landscape. Therefore, amendments to the legislation have been prepared in this regard,” Gorduladze explained.

When asked about who he considers the “satellites” of the United National Movement, Gorduladze clarified that this refers to all parties associated with the UNM.

“There is no distinction between these parties; they are essentially connected to the United National Movement. They will be held accountable legally in the Constitutional Court,” Archil Gorduladze asserted.
