Officers of the Criminal Police and Patrol Police Departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), in collaboration with the Investigation Service of the Finance Ministry and Customs Department, detained a citizen of the Islamic Republic of Iran born in 1989 for importing 200 kilograms of heroin in Georgia.

Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze reported at the briefing that the cost of imported drugs on the black market exceeded 50 million.

Darakhvelidze said that the Iranian citizen entered Georgia through the Red Bridge border checkpoint and carried the drugs hidden in a truck loaded with fish food. The detainee faces up to 20 years imprisonment or a life sentence.

“We continue investigation activities to reveal other accomplices of the crime,” Darakhvelidze said.
