Kazbegi Border Checkpoint temporarily closed for safety following early warning alert activation
The Kazbegi customs checkpoint has temporarily suspended operations due to the activation of an early warning alert system, the Revenue Service announces.
According to the agency, all types of customs control procedures have been halted at the Kazbegi customs checkpoint.
“The Ministry of Finance Revenue Service informs that an alert system located in the Devdoraki Gorge has been activated, as a result of which the high-precision system immediately transmitted an alert signal to the Kazbegi customs checkpoint.
For safety purposes, following coordinated work with relevant state agencies, employees and travellers at the aforementioned customs checkpoint have been relocated to a protected/safe territory.
We hereby clarify that all types of customs control procedures have been suspended at the Kazbegi customs checkpoint. Import-export of goods at Georgia’s customs border, as well as customs control procedures for individuals crossing the state border through the aforementioned customs checkpoint, cannot be carried out. If threatening factors are reduced, the Kazbegi customs checkpoint will resume operations in normal mode, at full capacity. Accordingly, the passage of travellers and cargo will proceed without obstruction,” the Revenue Service statement reads.
Ministry of Internal Affairs said earlier on Thursday that the Emergency Situations Management Service received a signal from the early warning system installed in Devdoraki gorge, which detects changes in the riverbed in case of a minimal rise of the water level.
