Infrastructure Minister: Abastumani's development works partially completed; future tasks planned
“Only part of the work needed for Abastumani’s development has been completed, and we are planning future assignments. In a few weeks, we will precisely formulate what needs to be done in the immediate period and begin active work,” Infrastructure Minister Revaz Sokhadze declared after inspecting Abastumani’s infrastructure projects.
During yet another regional inspection, Revaz Sokhadze familiarised himself with ongoing projects for the development of the town of Abastumani. According to the Minister, Abastumani is a strategically important resort with enormous potential, making it vital that its infrastructure develops accordingly.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, development of this unique resort continues with the complete rehabilitation of the Bagdati-Abastumani road and construction of the Abastumani bypass road. Work will be completed next year.
“Several projects of various purposes are underway in Abastumani for the development of a modern-type resort. A bus station and open car park designed for electric vehicle charging are being built at the town’s entrance.
Construction also continues on a reservoir and the necessary infrastructure for forest fire safety in the recreational forest park. Restoration and rehabilitation work is being carried out on multi-storey residential buildings and historic structures, which includes restoring facades to their original appearance. Restoration of the mosaic wall near the park has begun, and rehabilitation of a 400-metre section of Asatiani Street is commencing.
During 2019-2020, as part of Abastumani’s development plan, the Ministry of Infrastructure completed the comprehensive rehabilitation of approximately 20 historic houses dating from the 19th and 20th centuries along the resort’s central street. Additionally, the project included the restoration of the National Astrophysical Observatory, constructed in 1932, and the cable car, built in 1982. In 2019, a master plan for the development of the Abastumani resort was established. Additionally, to ensure a continuous, standards-compliant water supply and effective sewerage, the construction and rehabilitation of the resort’s water supply and sewerage systems, along with sewage treatment facilities, were completed between 2020 and 2022.
Abastumani’s central park was renovated in 2024. Restoration work included revitalising pedestrian areas, replacing lighting poles, installing new benches and litter bins, and upgrading water supply, irrigation, and electrical networks. Additionally, the fountain was renovated, and the dendrology collection was refreshed to enhance the resort’s overall aesthetic and functionality. Children’s entertainment spaces and a multifunctional stadium were arranged within the park territory.
Last year, a new dome and telescope were installed at Abastumani Observatory. An Austrian company manufactured the telescope, while the dome was specially crafted for Abastumani Observatory by an Italian firm. A kindergarten designed for 75 children was also built in Abastumani,” the Ministry of Infrastructure stated.
