Hungary's Ambassador: We have got assurances Georgia looks after all its prisoners

Hungary’s Ambassador to Georgia, Anna Maria Sikó, remarked on media following the meeting with Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze over jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s case who was denied by Strasbourg Court to be transferred to Warsaw for treatment.

The Ambassador deemed the meeting “a very interesting and fruitful discussion, very open and frank.”

“We are neither lawyers nor medical doctors and we know this case is also political. On the politics, we can not comment. It’s up to you and the Georgian people to decide on politics,” she stated.

Anna Maria Sikó noted that “We have got assurances that Georgia looks after all its prisoners, including Mr. Saakashvili.”

“Whether the prisoner has been a politician or somebody else before, should be treated fairly and on the way to membership to the European Union, the rule of law should exist, it should be fair, it should be the same for everybody and we have got assurances that Georgia looks after all its prisoners, including Mr Saakashvili,” she asserted.

On May 12, the European Court of Human Rights rejected the request to use an interim measure to transfer jailed former president, Mikheil Saakashvili, to Warsaw for treatment. Nor did the court order the state to transfer him to another medical facility in the country.
