Health Minister meets medical staff, specialists to review management of rare diseases in Batumi

Georgian Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze, alongside parliamentary Health and Social Affairs Committee Chair Zaza Lominadze and Adjara Health Minister Nino Nizharadze, met with medical staff and branch specialists to review the management of rare diseases in Batumi.

The meeting focused on the region’s needs in this area and the prospects of their accesibility at Batumi Republican Hospital to ensure the provision of necessary services to patients.

Mikheil Sarjveladze spoke in detail about the new component of the state program offering monitoring of health state for patients diagnosed with rare neuromuscular diseases tailored with direct involvement of physicians and their recommendations.

The program comprises the services of a neurologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, nutritionist, a in-hospital service once a year and an ambulatory service twice per year, while costs of services are fully covered by the state.

Mikheil Sarjveladze further informed that the Ministry is working on the creation of a united database, which is in the final stage.

In a dialogue format, phisicians reviewed modern methods of diagnosis and treatment, with special emphasis on the management of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The Minister emphasized that the management of rare diseases and their complex approach requires close cooperation between state institutions and the medical community. He stressed that the Ministry continues to actively consult with experts in the field in order to jointly find the best evidence-based solutions.
