Gori Regional Court rules imprisonment for police officers charged with violently exceeding official authority
The Gori Regional Court ruled imprisonment for police officers charged with violently exceeding official authority, Judge Germane Dadeshkeliani announced the decision.
The Judge satisfied the plea of both the imposition of imprisonment and dismissal from posts.
The defence requested that the detained police officers be released without any preventive measures, claiming that the prosecution was in a hurry due to high public interest and that there was insufficient evidence to warrant detention.
The plaintiff stated that imprisonment was the only correct decision due to the threat of evidence destruction and risk of escape.
The Prosecutor explained that both individuals were assigned the status of victims and that the investigation continued.
The Prosecutor’s Office arrested six individuals in Gori on charges of violently exceeding official authority in connection with actions taken by police officers. They were indicted under subparagraph ‘b’ of the third part of Article 333 of the Criminal Code that pertains to 5-8 years imprisonment as the punishment measure.
On May 27, video footage was circulated showing officers of the Shida Kartli Police physically assaulting two individuals during an arrest in the so-called Kombinati district of Gori.
