I am glad and support Georgia's European ambitions, but we cannot give quick, hasty promises - Angela Merkel
I’m very open telling you that I am glad and support Georgia’s European ambitions, so that’s why we have Association and Free Trade Agreements, but we cannot give you quick, hasty promises,” – German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated in response to the question of a student about Georgia’s EU membership.
She said that on the one hand, the country, which is a candidate for membership, must fulfill certain preconditions and on the other hand the EU should be capable to accept new states.
“Nowadays you know that in the process of EU membership, Western Balkan countries are in perspective. We should have a very effective and flexible structure,” – German Chancellor said.
According to her, due to their clear European perspective, the next will be Georgia and Ukraine.
“So far, we do not talk about membership. Step by step we should start talking about it. I cannot say that this process will be completed in five years, but my visit is aimed at opening this discussion”, – Angela Merkel stated.
