Giga Avaliani's Family members hold protest in front of Prosecutor General's Office
Family members of the late Giga Avaliani, human rights activists, and their supporters are holding a protest in front of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia, demanding an effective investigation into Avaliani’s death and the resignation of Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze.
According to lawyer Zaza Khatiashvili, the family has not been granted access to the materials of the criminal case. He stated that if the Prosecutor General does not resign, Avaliani’s mother, Eka Kupatadze, will begin a hunger strike on January 17.
“We demand that a thorough investigation be conducted and that all perpetrators are brought to justice. We have given the prosecutor’s office a deadline for an effective investigation. Today, together with the victim’s mother, we are demanding the resignation of Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze,” Khatiashvili said.
For context, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia stated on January 7, confirming that it remains ready to meet with Avaliani’s family at any time.
According to the agency, four minors have been arrested in connection with Avaliani’s death. One has been charged under Article 117, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (intentional grave harm to health resulting in death), and three under Article 376, Part 1 (failure to report a serious crime). The investigation, conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, is ongoing.
