German Embassy: ECHR ruling in Georgia v. Russia case marks step towards justice and human rights; Germany supports Georgia’s territorial integrity
“We welcome the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights: Russia must pay over 253 million euros to Georgia as compensation for the thousands of victims during and after the 2008 war,” the German Embassy in Georgia posted on its social media.
According to the Embassy, this ruling marks an important step forward in the pursuit of justice and the respect of human rights.
“It affirms Russia’s responsibility for the injustices committed. The ECHR highlighted that there has been a comprehensive system of violations of the European Convention on Human Rights by Russia, including excessive use of force, unlawful detentions, and restrictions on people’s freedom of movement. Germany continues to support Georgia’s territorial integrity unwaveringly and without exception,” writes the German Embassy in Georgia.
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has once again ruled in favour of Georgia regarding the 2008 war. Its decision mandated Russia to pay over 253 million euros in compensation to Georgia for the ongoing occupation.
