German Ambassador to Georgia affirms Kulevi was included in EU sanction proposal, supporting evidence was provided
“Georgian media, including the sanctioned ones, keep asking me to clarify my statement on the 20th EU sanction package and the Kulevi port,” writes Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, on social media.
“My response, a thread about disinformation. Summary: I stand by my statement that Kulevi was included in the EU proposal and an evidence package was presented,” he added.
Regarding the 20th EU sanctions package against Russia, Ambassador Fischer stated on February 24: “I would like to emphasise that Hungary is your closest ally within the EU, which the Georgian government has chosen as its partner. It is often said that this should help Georgia in joining the EU. I urge you to reconsider; this will not happen. We have discussed sanctions, and the Kulevi port was part of the sanctions package. This was a legislative proposal within the EU, which Hungary and Slovakia have also blocked.”
For context, the EU has since removed the Kulevi oil terminal in Georgia from the 20th sanctions package against Russia. The EU Special Representative for Sanctions, David O’Sullivan, informed Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili of this decision in a letter.
