Geostat launches Population Census 2024

The Georgian National Statistical Office has initiated the preparatory work for the General Population Census 2024 by visiting all municipalities in the Imereti region.

Geostat has begun the first phase of work, which involves listing buildings and households in the targeted municipalities. This fieldwork will be carried out by Geostat-trained staff over 15 days, utilizing tablets and modern technologies for data collection.

“During Phase I, information on households and the number of residents will be collected, providing a preliminary understanding of the country’s population distribution. In June 2023, the preliminary household listings compilation will extend to other regions of Georgia, covering the entire country by the end of the year. A total of 3,500 trained interviewers will be involved in this process,” Geostat reported.

The General Population Census 2024 data collection will occur from November 14 to December 19, 2024. It will gather detailed information on population size, composition, and socio-economic and demographic conditions based on self-government units and settlements.

“This census information is crucial for assessing the demographic situation, setting priorities for socio-economic development, and providing valuable insights into the country. Additionally, the General Population Census plays a vital role in monitoring the progress of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators,” Geostat notes.

The Agricultural Census will be conducted simultaneously with the Population Census in 2024 to optimize financial and human resources.

Population censuses are typically conducted every ten years, with the previous one in Georgia held in 2014.
