Georgia's Economy and Azerbaijan's Energy Ministers forge strategic partnership on energy cooperation
During her official visit to Baku, Mariam Kvrivishvili, Georgia’s Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, met with the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, Parviz Shahbazov, to discuss key priorities in the energy partnership between the two nations.
The meeting reaffirmed Georgia and Azerbaijan’s status as strategic allies in the energy sector. Mariam Kvrivishvili outlined Georgia’s ongoing and upcoming reforms within the energy industry, highlighting major infrastructure projects, notably the flagship initiative of the South Caucasus electricity cable that connects the Georgian power system to the European grid—a project involving multiple countries, including Azerbaijan.
The ministers also explored strategies to promote investment in energy development. Kvrivishvili emphasised Georgia’s abundant hydro resources, which enable the realisation of large-scale energy projects crucial for ensuring the country’s energy independence and security. She further highlighted Georgia’s potential to expand cooperation into wind, solar, and other renewable energies. To attract investments and foster a conducive environment for investors, the Georgian government is implementing several competitive, market-based programs, opening new opportunities for renewable energy projects.
Both ministers underscored the importance of collaborating on the Southern Gas Corridor project and discussed plans for developing and expanding the regional power infrastructure, as outlined in the Strategic Cooperation Agreement between Georgia and Azerbaijan.
