Georgian students successfully competed at European Mathematical Olympiad

The first-ever European Mathematical Olympiad (EMO-2026) was held in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, where Georgian pupils claimed one gold medal, three silver medals and two honourable mentions. The results were announced by Georgia’s Ministry of Education, Science and Youth.

The team’s results were as follows: Sandro Zhghenti (Vladimir Komarov Tbilisi Public School of Physics and Mathematics) — gold medal; Mirza Shanidze (Vladimir Komarov Tbilisi Public School of Physics and Mathematics) — silver medal; Giorgi Gumberidze (Vladimir Komarov Tbilisi Public School of Physics and Mathematics) — silver medal; Irakli Sherozia (Vladimir Komarov Tbilisi Public School of Physics and Mathematics) — silver medal; Alexandre Katsia (Vladimir Komarov Tbilisi Public School of Physics and Mathematics) — honourable mention; Rati Ratiani (Academician Ilia Vekua Tbilisi Public School of Physics and Mathematics No. 42) — honourable mention.

The team was led by Genadi Margvelashvili, headteacher of Andria Razmadze Kutaisi Public School of Physics and Mathematics No. 41, with former Olympiad participant Luka Macharashvili serving as co-leader, and Zura Abramishvili, representative of the Global Talent Fund, as observer.

The competition was held over two rounds. In each four-and-a-half-hour session, pupils were tasked with solving one problem from each of the following areas: algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and number theory. Georgia’s team finished fifth overall, which is a significant achievement on the international stage. The Olympiad brought together 23 teams from 21 countries, with 138 pupils competing in total.

“The initiative to field a national team at the Olympiad came from Andria Razmadze Kutaisi Public School of Physics and Mathematics No. 41. The team was selected based on national olympiad results and additional qualifying rounds. Participation costs for the pupils and team leader were covered by Georgia’s Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, with co-funding provided by the Kutaisi University City non-entrepreneurial legal entity.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) has been held since 1959; Georgia has participated since 1993, and with considerable distinction. Across 33 appearances, the country has accumulated six gold, 23 silver and 83 bronze medals, alongside 59 honourable mentions,” the Ministry of Education stated.
