Georgian Railways carried 17% fewer passengers in 2025, whilst freight volumes also declined

According to data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GeoStat), Georgia’s railways transported 13.3 million tonnes of freight in 2025, representing a decline of 3.0 per cent compared to 2024. Of this total, 7.9 per cent was domestic haulage, 34.7 per cent constituted international freight (excluding transit), and 57.5 per cent comprised transit cargo.

Of the total volume of freight transported by rail under the international regime in 2025, 75.8% consisted of imports and 24.2% exports. The Russian Federation was the country of dispatch for 35.8 per cent of all freight imported by rail, followed by Azerbaijan at 27.2 per cent, with all remaining countries of dispatch each accounting for less than 10 per cent and collectively representing 37.0 per cent. Of freight exported by rail, Armenia was the leading destination at 16.2 per cent, followed by Kazakhstan at 9.2 per cent and the Russian Federation at 8.4 per cent, with all other destination countries combined accounting for 66.2 per cent.

In 2025, the domestic freight breakdown by commodity group revealed that metal ores and other mining and quarrying products accounted for 56.5 per cent, coke and refined petroleum products made up 22.7 per cent, and transport equipment comprised 9.9 per cent.

In international freight, the principal commodities imported by rail were coke and refined petroleum products (47.3 per cent), other non-metallic mineral products (17.0 per cent), metal ores and other mining and quarrying products (11.0 per cent), agricultural, hunting and forestry products (6.8 per cent), coal and lignite (5.0 per cent), basic metals (4.7 per cent), and chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres (2.7 per cent).

Exports by rail were led by chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres (35.0 per cent), food products, beverages and tobacco (25.6 per cent), metal ores and other mining and quarrying products (13.0 per cent), and basic metals (12.1 per cent).

Georgian railways carried 1,717,900 passengers in 2025, a figure 17.3% lower than the previous year. Over the same period, passenger traffic totalled 393.3 million passenger-kilometres, down 17.7 per cent on the corresponding figure for 2024.

In 2025, domestic services accounted for 1,690,200 passengers, 98.4 per cent of all rail passengers, a decline of 17.5 per cent on 2024.

International services carried 27,700 passengers, down 2.4 per cent year-on-year. Of those travelling on international routes, 67.9 per cent arrived from Armenia, whilst 32.1 per cent departed in that direction. No passengers were carried to or from any other neighbouring country in 2025.
