Georgian PM: State and private sector must expand exports and enter new, profitable markets
“The joint responsibility of the state and the private sector is to expand the variety of export products and to establish a foothold in new, lucrative international markets,” stated the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, during his speech at the presentation of the Agricultural Development Index.
As the Head of Government emphasised, market diversification remains the primary safeguard for stability and long-term competitiveness.
“The main challenges we face include land fragmentation, lack of technological advancement, and low productivity. The state is the principal partner for businesses in overcoming these obstacles. The agro-credit subsidy programme has already produced tangible results; since 2018, the sector’s total output has nearly doubled, although there remains much work to be done.
We must also highlight the export sector. Currently, foreign sales amount to 4.5 billion GEL. This is a significant figure; however, the reality is that exports are predominantly based on just a few products.
The joint task of the state and private sector is to diversify the range of export commodities and establish a presence in new, high-value international markets. Market diversification is the key to our stability and long-term competitiveness. I am confident that today’s discussions on these and other matters will translate into concrete steps, helping both government and business to make even more effective decisions,” the Prime Minister concluded.
