“Georgian people, government, and church stand together during any vitally significant moment. This proves Georgia is on the correct path,” said Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.

The Speaker remarked on the statement of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude, Ilia II, saying the European Commission’s decision is the outcome of a joint effort by the Georgian people and government.

“We, the Georgian people, government, and the church, are on one side, and the marginal opposition, which opposes the Georgian people, does not recognize the Georgian government and fights against the Georgian church, is on the other side. This is the actual picture,” he said.

Shalva Papuashvili expressed gratitude to the Patriarch and the Georgian Orthodox Church for their stance.

“The Georgian Church has historically been our link to the European civilization. Even today, when we speak about Europe, we mean Europe is the Christian culture historically and shaped Europe,” he said.

The Speaker slammed the opposition for not understanding the democratic principle, saying the “government represented the people elected by people and acting for the interests of people and any other attempt of separation is the Russian narrative.”

On November 8, the European Commission recommended the European Council to grant candidate status to Georgia.
