Georgian FM says Black Sea Electricity Cable project gives Georgia new European role

Georgia, like our region, is of great importance to the West, with an essential function related to the diversification of transport routes and energy supply to Europe, said the Georgian Foreign Minister, Ilia Darchiashvili, when addressing the parliament in the interpellation format.

Darchiashvili believes that the region’s recent political developments have made it more urgent to renew and diversify Eurasian transit routes; the role of the Trans-Caspian international transport route, the so-called Middle Corridor, has increased in terms of efficient transportation of goods between East and West.

As Darchiashvili noted, Georgia has contributed to the safe, stable, and timely transportation of the increased cargo flow in full compliance with the international sanctions.

The Minister emphasized the Black Sea Electricity Cable project, which “adds a new European function to Georgia and considerably strengthens Georgia’s role in protecting Europe’s energy security,” according to him. “Georgia becomes not only a reliable transit country but also an exporter of renewable energy produced in the country,” he added.

Foreign Minister reviewed bilateral relations with neighboring countries in the context of transit corridor development.

“Georgia has always supported peaceful cooperation/coexistence in the South Caucasus,” he said.
