Georgian FM: Kaja Kallas keeps using EU as pressure instrument against Georgia; Brussels' bureaucracy needs to change its attitude
“Georgia has nothing to change; the Georgian government is elected by the people, committed to safeguarding the nation’s best interests, and acts in the best interests of our country,” stated Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili.
Georgian Foreign Minister made the remarks in response to a statement by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, who indicated that EU foreign ministers had delivered “a clear message that the country must change course.”
According to Maka Botchorishvili, if anyone needs to change, it is the Brussels bureaucracy that must adjust its attitude towards Georgia.
“First and foremost, what we are seeing from Kaja Kallas is a continuation of using the EU issue as an instrument of pressure in relation to Georgia. If anything needs to change, it’s the Brussels bureaucracy; they need to revise their attitude toward Georgia. We have never once refused dialogue with the European Union, including on the very issues they themselves so frequently choose to emphasise.
Subsequently, Georgia has nothing to change. The Georgian government is democratically elected by the people, it upholds the best interests of our country, and it does what serves our country’s interests to ensure that there is peace, stability, and the right conditions for economic development within the country. What precisely Kaja Kallas finds objectionable about this course is quite incomprehensible. Why this course should be deemed incompatible with the European Union is equally incomprehensible. Accordingly, if anyone’s attitude needs to change, it is solely and exclusively that of the current EU bureaucracy in Brussels,” Botchorishvili declared.
