Georgian FM hails UN Resolution support as "major diplomatic victory"

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili emphasised that the return of internally displaced persons to their homes is a top priority for Georgia. She noted that the Georgian government consistently advocates for this issue and actively incorporates it into the agendas of international organisations.

According to Botchorishvili, the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly is one of the best means available for the broader public and international community to focus attention on the issue of returning internally displaced persons to their homes.

“The support that Georgia received today is the result of very intensive work and enormous efforts by Georgian diplomacy – a very major victory. Georgia has not had such extensive support from the international community since 2008, when we began initiating and presenting this resolution to the UN. The work that went into supporting this resolution deserves appreciation, and the support of our partners – those countries that back the resolution, who are co-initiators and co-sponsors with us, and who subsequently help us gain this support – deserves recognition. This merits our gratitude. We must, of course, continue working. It is important that this issue remains constantly on the international agenda and that we use every mechanism available in international organisations to ensure discussion and attention to Georgia’s issues,” Maka Botchorishvili declared.

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution initiated by Georgia alongside 63 countries from various regions worldwide—titled “On the Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia, and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia.” The resolution received unprecedented support, with 107 countries backing it.
